How A Coach Can Help Your Business to Succeed

Finding a competitive advantage for your business is one thing. Sustaining it day to day is another . The perpetual grind of performance improvement can be overwhelming to say the least. Hell, getting out of bed is sometimes too much to think about.

The process of continual renewal for individuals and organizations is never-ending, which is exactly the reason why soliciting an external party in the form of coaching can help lead your business towards lasting success.

Here are Helpful ways a coach can help you achieve business success:

  1. Eliminate tunnel vision

Whether it’s a life coach, leadership coach or business coach, having somebody with an array of diverse experiences only helps broaden your own awareness about yourself, others and the competitive landscape.

Nobody learns in a vacuum — we learn through knowledge sharing that’s dependent upon relationships.
Think about it.

When you read, you have a relationship with the author and you either adopt his or her viewpoint or not. When you travel, you have a relationship with the passenger sitting beside you — positive or not. In either case, you acquire new information that broadens your awareness.

  1. Minimize Errors

Coaches work with many clients. A coach can share past lessons learned from other clientele (while maintaining confidentiality, of course) who faced similar challenges, thereby saving you the time, money and emotional investment from repeating the mistakes yourself.
Don’t get me wrong — mistakes are healthy and necessary for improvement. However, to the extent that such lessons learned can be gained through somebody else experience, even better.

  1. Say “ahh”

The saying that “it’s lonely at the top” is all too true, especially for those leaders unwilling to trust or talk with others. Sharing concerns with a coach offers two advantages.
First, it acts as an emotional release. Packing all your worries, gripes and frustrations into one suitcase of emotion has the same end state as at the airport: a high price.

3 Ways to Secure your Dreams Before Its Actualization

While growing up, I discovered that dreams could automatically change into imaginations if it’s not been trailed in the right path. Sometimes we ignorantly leave our dream track to join others in theirs forgetting that we all have different dreams and careers.

“A dream doesn’t become reality by magic it takes sweat, determination and hard-work.” Colin Powell

The very reason I have written this article, is because of a dream I had 2 years ago (to reach people and the world from here). To me it’s all a miracle, considering my personal circumstances, I found myself in the pitch of life, “my dreams VS my family”.

I wanted to be a blogger, but I thought it was far too difficult due to too much discouragement from my family. I never believed I could ever secure my dreams to be a blogger.

Maybe you’ve never been as unsure of yourself as I used to be, but you can likely relate to the feeling of wanting to do something but feeling terrified to start. This does not only limit your potential in life; It also weakens your ability to make a positive impact on the world around you.

SEE ALSO: Why I Choose Blogging

I am so lucky that I never gave up. I believed in myself, I overcame the greatest fear of failure, I may not be a real success, but I would definitely become one.

“Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.” – Harriet Tubman

Always remember that failure belongs to those who believe in the beauty and the actualization of their dreams.

Now, what are the ways to secure your dreams before its actualization? Here are 3 helpful ways that have helped secure my dreams.

1)      Believe in yourself

first step to securing your dreams and laying a strong foundation for its actualization is to have faith in your abilities! This has been a message that I have passed to many of my friends and so many other persons.

Without a humble and reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful and your dreams may never be actualized.Take a leap of faith and begin this wondrous New Year by believing in yourself.

And believe that there is a loving source, a sower of dreams just waiting to be asked to help you make your dreams come true.

Believe in yourself, take on your challenges, dig deep within yourself to conquer fear. Never let anyone bring you down, you’ve got to keep going.

Always remember; there’s no limit to what you can achieve.

2)      Overcome your biggest fears.

One of the greatest fears among young entrepreneurs is “the fear of failure” sometimes, when want something so badly, we fear failure more than more than we fear being without that thing. And that’s a bad approach to the situation.

I was also attacked with the fear of failure and that of my family, but I overcame both.

“I have to face the fear. I have to take control of the situation and find a way to make it less frightening – Veronica Roth

At times some of us don’t easily notice this fear, until discouragement from friends and family begins to knock on you, otherwise we do notice and always make sure we secure our dreams. True Entrepreneur have no fear

3)      Be Original

At times we copy others forgetting the fact that life is like an examination, and we all have different question papers.

Copying others simply means you aren’t ready to secure your dreams and of course you aren’t willing to succeed.

Learn to create your own ideas, Bloggers and writers learn to create your own content.

I use to be a Blogger who copies a lot, at times I copy including the site title and adverts (Lol), though I was ignorant, I realized it could destroy my dreams of being a successful blogger you gain more knowledge while creating your own content, it also expose your readers to fresh topics, originality maters.

Have you giving up on your dreams? Its never too late to Bounce back

Strive Masiyiwa: Building an Efficient Organization – Part 5

__Process: getting the right things done right.

For the last few weeks, I’ve talked about the critical importance of “people” in organizational management. Today I want to talk about “process.” Every single day, I’m approached by people with great business ideas, and I also have my own fair share of new ideas. Sometimes I just love to sit in my study, or go for a walk, just thinking about a new business idea.

Let me share with you one of my best kept secrets: If I can’t get my mind around the PROCESS, I’m not going to do it!

I have to feel I have a deep understanding of how an organization will emerge to take this great idea forward. I can easily take 50% of my thinking time on this. Once I get my mind around the process, I can then focus on the right PEOPLE to make the right things happen.

__Process and people are the backbone of the organization.

Now what I mean here by “process” is the series of actions you take in order to achieve an intended outcome or result. Within one business, several different processes usually take place – raising capital, strategic planning, recruiting and training staff, research, product development, product testing, marketing and so forth.

When I first started in business, I was still very young, and had worked for just a few years. Fortunately, my two employers had been a computer start-up, in Cambridge, England, and a state-owned enterprise (SOE) in my home country, Zimbabwe. In both organizations I’d made observations about how companies are set up and run.

I loved the start-up, which had only two owners. Decisions were made quickly and I got my chance to do all sorts of things, even though I only had a freshly-minted engineering degree! The SOE was the exact opposite: it had rigid organizational structures. There were many highly-skilled and qualified individuals, but decisions were slow.

Whilst I enjoyed the mission of the SOE, I knew I had to get back to the start-up environment. I nevertheless took away a critical understanding of how big organizations work, including their political culture.

If I’d been able to choose, I probably would have first joined a large international organization before I went off on my own. I certainly would have loved to get an understanding of “best practice” from an international organization like Coca-Cola or GE, both of whom I greatly admired. The opportunity was simply not available, so I did the next best thing… I bought books about them.

My favorite books were written by entrepreneurs, explaining how they set up these businesses. At weekends I’d just disappear into my own world of Sony, IBM, Coca-Cola — the great companies of my day. I didn’t just read, I devoured their material!

SEE ALSO: Strive Masiyiwa: Building an Efficient Organization – Part 1

I wanted more, so I moved into the really academic work of people like Peter Drucker and W. Edwards Deming (Google them). I had all their books and articles.

In my own country, I’d constantly ask questions about the organizational structures of well-established companies. Information was always limited back then, not like now with the Internet!

As a young entrepreneur in Africa, it won’t always be possible for you to start your own business after a professional career in an established organization where you can learn all the ropes, and study processes.

# You still owe it to yourself to try and close the deficit in your understanding of what it takes to organize and build an effective business organization.

# You may not even be ready yet to have people working for you, with all those fancy titles and positions, but you still must have the intellectual curiosity to do your homework and understand what’s really happening!

If you don’t understand the processes that help you build and run an efficient organization — managed by capable, highly motivated professionals — you’ll struggle, wear yourself down, and probably end up bust, or worse.

Let’s get down to business, real business. We’re good managers, what about you?

THE END

Strive Masiyiwa: Building an Efficient Organisation – Part 4

__A great vision needs great people.

Organizational management is really about “people and process.” If you don’t know how to master these two, it doesn’t matter what you’ve invented, or how much money you’ve raised… you won’t make it in business.

It’s usually really hard to get the best people to join you when you’ve just started a business because you’re (rightly) considered too risky.

It’s particularly difficult when you, the founder, are yourself young and inexperienced. I know what I’m talking about because when I started out almost 30 years ago, I was only 26 years old and didn’t have either the money or reputation to attract people to work with me.

So I understand why most people in that situation will often turn to unemployed relatives and friends, who can sometimes be unskilled and even troublesome. Believe me, I’ve been there, and done that!

I almost laugh now when I look back, but I hired some people who were downright incompetent and almost got me killed… Remember I’m an electrical engineer by training, and some of my early recruits as electricians did not quite measure up!

In my own case, my partner and I did almost every kind of job in our little business. There was simply no room for “pretending to be the big man”! When we did a job for a customer, I was there myself, and sometimes when we finished, I joined the cleaners to make sure the customer’s premises were left clean. We did the work, the cleaning, the invoicing, and the books. We woke up early, and went to bed very late.

I never complained because it was “honest hard work” for a young man, and I enjoyed it. I interviewed every single person that I hired very carefully. I always looked for people who were skilled, sober, honest, and prepared to go the extra mile. I knew them personally, and their families.

I tried to be fair in every aspect of my dealings with my employees. It wasn’t just that I considered myself an honorable man, but I also knew that “people talk.” I wanted word to get out that I was a “fair guy” in an industry where people were often exploited, and owners of businesses were known to think of themselves first, particularly when they got paid, as I discussed last week.

When I did get paid, the first thing I tried to do was invest back in the business. In particular, I wanted my staff always to have the best tools for their job. I also wanted them to be proud of their employer. I was fastidious over things like uniforms, presentations and appearance before a customer.

Knowing that I didn’t always have the opportunity and money to hire the most skilled people, I focused a lot on training and workshops, which I handled myself. I drilled and drilled my staff. We talked about each job, and I allowed everyone to say something about what we learned. It’s great to have the big idea, but you must have an eye for the details.

Then one day it happened: I got a call from an engineer who worked for a highly reputable and well-established player in our industry. He wanted to join me. And soon it was a flood, with people prepared to take a pay cut for the opportunity to work with my young company.

Now remember what I said earlier: “People talk.” You want them to give you and your company a good reputation, one that attracts the best people to your business. The best people are the most profitable. That’s business!

In his bestselling book, “Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap… and Others Don’t,” Jim Collins writes, “Great vision without great people is irrelevant.”

Do you have the right people in your company focusing their time doing the right things?

Strive Masiyiwa: building an efficient organization – Part 3

__Always pay your workers first.

You can’t call yourself an entrepreneur if you have the habit of not paying your workers on time, erratically, or not at all. Real business leaders always pay their employees first. Let’s call it the first law of entrepreneurship.

Let’s talk.

I began my business career as a construction contractor more than 30 years ago. My business entailed getting construction contracts, some which took several years to complete. I would sometimes have thousands of people working on my projects. 90% of my people were paid on a weekly basis. It was almost a ritual, whereby we’d go to the bank on Friday morning to collect the “payroll.”

Each worker was paid in cash, and we would sit and pack the money into little brown envelopes, after deducting taxes. We’d then travel to the sites and pay them their money.

I never ever missed a payroll… except once, and it probably saved my life. I was abducted from my office at gun point on one of my payroll days. The person who raised the alarm that I was missing said this: “We know something has happened to him because he didn’t come to supervise the release of this week’s payroll.”

# If you owe your workers money, you’re not yet an entrepreneur.

The second law of successful entrepreneurship is this: If, for any reason, you’re going to miss your payroll, you must always make sure the lowest paid workers are the first to get paid — not the managers and others you deem most skilled.

# Always pay the lowest paid workers first. They’re the most vulnerable.

If we didn’t have enough money to meet our payroll, I spoke to my senior people and asked them to make the sacrifice. It also meant I myself would go home with nothing. But workers like cleaners, laborers (we had a lot of these in the construction business), drivers etc., were always paid first. This always included the youngest people in our business.

If you want to go far as an entrepreneur, treat workers’ salaries and wages as sacrosanct. If you see a big man who has lots of cars, a big house, goes on holiday overseas but is in arrears on salaries and wages, he’s really not an entrepreneur.

Don’t be fooled, he’s not a big man at all! True entrepreneurs pay their people on time, all the time. And they take care of the most vulnerable members of their organizations first. I’d rather someone called me a successful entrepreneur on the basis that I never missed my payroll, than on the basis that I made a billion dollars.

Now to help avoid such a crisis, there’s one thing you must learn to do straight away in your business, and that’s manage your cash flow… your “accounts receivable” (sales) and your “accounts payable” (expenses). If you don’t keep track of your cash flow, I guarantee at the end of some months, you’ll have a shortfall.

If you haven’t already done so, put together a cash flow budget, with a few different scenarios (best case, worst case, different assumptions). You can’t predict everything, of course, and surprises happen, but do your best with what you know now. Cash in? Cash out? Timing? Enough cash to meet payroll? (This is a complicated subject but we’re just talking about payroll here.)

A few years ago there was an article in Forbes’ magazine called “Success will come and go, but integrity is forever.” Never forget that. Most all businesses have legal and contractual obligations which you must respect. But there are also moral obligations to consider… Do you know the difference?

Strive Masiyiwa: building an efficient organization – Part 2

__Talking a good game is not enough.

I was meeting with one of New York’s most successful bankers, when he quipped, “In my business we don’t rely on intellectual property. There’s nothing we do that’s so special; we’re just damned good managers of businesses!”

I could immediately understand what he meant because when, for instance, you stop to think about a business like McDonald’s, you ask “What’s so special about a hamburger?”

But somehow out of that humble hamburger they’ve built a $96bn business… a global business bigger than the GDP of Kenya ($70bn)!

__They are “just damn good managers of business!”

When we launched our Mobile Money business in Zimbabwe, it wasn’t a new idea in Zimbabwe, or in Africa. To be honest, one of our competitors was a year ahead of us, but it really didn’t matter to me. I knew that when we finally launched our own service, it would be bigger and better because “We’re good managers of businesses! It’s not all IP and innovation!”

Whenever I see a business, as a management practitioner, I’m interested in how it’s run. I’m always asking myself, “How are they organized?”

We hear a lot spoken about good leaders, but a good leader who doesn’t know how to manage effectively, using the latest management techniques, is a total waste of time as far as I’m concerned.

You’ve heard the expression, “He talks a good game, but he can’t play.”

Unfortunately, many entrepreneurs are like that. They can talk a good game, but they cannot manage an organization. Talking a good game can be important, but it’s not enough!

If you want to build a profitable and growing business organization, you must first have an acute awareness of the role that organizational management plays. Your awareness must extend to an appreciation that it is a “technical discipline” which must be learnt.

It doesn’t happen naturally: Good management is something you must apply yourself to. Never fool yourself into believing that if you have a good idea, and some money, you just hire the right people and “Hey presto, you have a big successful business!”

I want you to be different: I want you to be able to pick up an idea, any idea, and turn it into a successful business organization that generates profits, and can grow into a national, regional, and continental champion, even a global one.

Agriculture and the Nigerian Economy

Nigeria Economy is blessed with series of Natural resources, yet they suffer in the midst of plenty. Nigeria has a high poverty rate comparison with other African countries despite its high GDP.

well I once shared an article on Ways to boost the Nigerian Economy Through Agriculture Maybe you should check it out.

However, Nigeria’s Agricultural sector has a high potential for growth, but this potential is not realized. Productivity is low and basically stagnant.

Farming Systems, which are mostly small in scale, are still predominantly subsistence-based and for the most part depend on the varieties of the weather . Many agricultural policies have also been ineffective, either because they have been misguide  or because their impacts have been swamped by macro policies affecting inflation,  exchange rates, and cost of capital.

Recognizing these challenges the Federal Government of Nigeria has identified the modernization of the agricultural sector as a major priority.

This article is aimed at shedding some light on the role of agriculture in the Nigerian Economy.

agri

Agriculture involves the science, practice and occupation of cultivating land ans raising crops. It also involves the feeding, breeding and raising of livestock, The main purpose of agriculture is to provide food and raw materials for human use.

Nigeria is currently poised to be a world power in the Agricultural sector.

The fact that Nigeria is richly blessed with abundant human and Natural resources is one point that has been consistently repeated in Various fora.

Agriculture contributes between 30 and 40 percent to the national gross domestic product (GDP) of the the country with a huge majority of the rural population engaging in subsistence Agriculture.

The relatively diverse variety of climate condition in Nigeria makes it possible to raise a wide range of crops across the country.

The major crops grown in economic quantity in Nigeria are beans, cashew nuts, cassava, cocoa, groundnuts, gum, Arabic kola-nut, Maize, melon, millet, oil palm, plantain and banana, rice, rubber, sorghum, Soy beans and yams.

Coupled with these crops Nigeria also produces fruits such as pineapples, oranges, lemon, lime, and tangerine.

Prior to the discovery of oil in Nigeria, agriculture was then the highest earner of foreign exchange for the country, and Nigeria was also largely self-sufficient in food production.

Although agriculture is no longer the focal point of the Nigerian Economy, it still plays some important roles in the country.

………………..To be continued on Roles of Agriculture in Nigeria’s Economy.

Strive Masiyiwa: Building an Efficient Organization – Part 1

As an entrepreneur, you may have a great idea or innovation which you believe is going to change your community, your country, or maybe even the world we live in. And you’ll probably make a lot of money along the way. That’s allowed, and there’s nothing wrong with it, provided you don’t harm others, the environment, or break the law.

Go ahead, make money, be a billionaire, and you know I’ll be right there cheering you all the way! But before you can ever get there, you’ll have to build an efficient business organization, employing lots of people, because no one can do these things alone.

In this new series, I’m going to talk about what I call, “The hardest thing to do in business: building an efficient organization.

You’ll face many different challenges as an entrepreneur, but the most difficult is building an efficient organization. What do I mean by efficient? Let me start with one formal definition: “Achieving maximum productivity with minimum wasted effort or expense.

Most people fail dismally in this area. It’s at once the most difficult and most complex thing that any entrepreneur ever has to do. In this series, we’ll talk about many issues including registering a business, recruiting and hiring your team, and organizational structure.

This is business “MBA stuff” and if you just want to run a little bottle store, it might be tough for you, but if you think you can open more than one bottle store, hang around and see. As they say in my beloved Nigeria, “It’s for the senior class.

You won’t be the next Dangote or Zuckerberg if you don’t know how to set up an efficient business organization.

To lay the foundations for this series, here’s another definition: The Cambridge dictionary describes “organization” as “a group whose members work together for a shared purpose in a continuing way.”

__The verb “organize” is also important here! It means, “to make the necessary plans for something to happen; arrange.”

Do I really need to write much more…? If only it were as simple and straightforward as it sounds!

Building an organization has many different aspects. Can you tell me the importance of nearly each and every word in these three definitions?

Organizations can be almost any size, but the ones I’ll be talking about here are ones that involve a hierarchy of authority and delegation: executive leadership, mid-level management, technical experts, frontline supervisors and employees in different departments, most with different operational functions.

This means a complex array of people with different talents and skills, like those I’m proud and blessed to have on our companies’ teams globally. Maybe different roles and gifts, but the key non-negotiable ingredients? Integrity, shared vision, mutual respect, accountability.

I won’t dwell on problems so much as solutions in this series, but to get started, here’s a list from a McKinsey report on some of the biggest challenges faced by companies (young and old) trying to build organizational capability:

# Organizational resistance to change.

# Lack of resources.

# Lack of credible metrics.

# (Lack of) identification of who is accountable for execution.

# Inability to gain attention and buy-in from line managers.

# Lack of senior management support.

# (Lack of) clear vision or objectives.

# Ineffective training approaches.

# Inconsistent application of methods, processes.

Now you see why I’ve said building an efficient organization is the hardest thing to do in business. But with great people on your team, all is possible!

CROWDRISING Nigeria… Make Money With Ease

Dear friend, greetings from my heart. Take time to read this, it can change your financial life forever!

I want to introduce you to a tested and proven system that guarantees you steady income into your Bank account every day to the tone of 370,000 in 14 days. Yeah, that may sound crazy and outrageous but it’s as true and real as the air we breath. Lol.

Details of the system:

It’s a network business called CROWD RISING. It’s a program that makes you money while you sleep 😀.

I will make this explanation as brief as possible, highlighting also the differences between this system and other network businesses.

Crowdrising is a peer to peer payment platform where you pay others and get paid too.  This simply connotes that there is NO central account where all monies are paid and disbursed, rather, members pay directly to each other in order of uplines and downlines. (uplines are people above you, while downlines are people below you)

Stages of the program:

There are 15 stages in the program where you can earn six figures 😀.

Stage 1: this is the first and least stage. Here, you register and you will be automatically paired with a NIGERIAN member from any part of the country. Failure to pay after 3 days, you get blocked You pay the sum of N7,400 to the person and upon confirmation by the person, you will be qualified to receive payments of N7,400 from five members. Now these five members can be brought by you to make it faster or it could be done by the random merger system or better still by promoting this link to nigerians who are yet to know. So, you pay 7400 and get activated to receive 7400*5 = 37000. This happens in two days to one week.

Stage 2:

After stage 1, you can upgrade to level 2 by paying 14,800 to a member in level 2 which the system will pair with you. When your payment is confirmed, you will automatically qualify to receive same amount from 25 persons. So, you pay 14,800 and get 14,800*25 = 370,000. Complete payment in this level takes 8days at most it is also due to publicity as it is a very new system.

Stage 3.

Here, you pay 22,200 to a member matched with you, and you will get 22,200*125 = 2.7million. This takes approximately 30days or less. The system works with a multiple of 5 on every level
The stages continue till the topmost which is stage 15. You are free to stop at any stage, but who wouldn’t want to make it to stage15??

Differences b/w this system and other network businesses :

This system is unique in many respects. I will highlight them here under.

1. Fastest payment system ever:

The cardinal selling point of this system is fastness. No need to waste many days just to be paid peanuts! The circles of this system is the fastest to complete. Is there any other system known to you that can pay you N37,000 in 2days for a 7,400 investment?? I answer in the negative 😜

So, with this system, you make your money fast,  as in, Usain Bolt speed ooh😀.

2. You are not required to bring people before you can earn money. but it might take longer to earn if you don’t. The greatest challenge of most networkers is the ability to convince others to join their network. This bottleneck has been made easier by the use of this link and by the advent of this system. All you need do is register relax and broadcast this on most social media post 😜. “money go dey find you” No need to stress yourself trying to bring people. In crowdrising, it’s believed that the facts and benefits of the system will speak audibly for itself to attract new members without tasking already existing members with such job.

3. You are not limited to your downlines. In crowdrising, members can get matched randomly by the system, though it might take a a bit longer so, you are not limited to your downlines as you can earn money from payments by people from different parts of the country. This is why you can escape bringing  people,by broadcasting this link

Note that, the link is being circulated around the country, so random matching occurs most time.

Many other benefits abound but I shall leave you to decide for yourself.

When you are done deciding, join us in making the cash😀 now that you have the opportunity.

4. Every new member is given 3 days to pay up or will be removed, this is to avoid stagnating payments as it is only meant for serious members

To register: CLICK HERE NOW

Note 1: for you to enjoy the aforementioned benefits, you must use the above link. It’s a link meant for Nigerians. The website has members from so many countries, but When u use the above link to register, you will be matched with people within Nigeria only so that your payments can go directly to you Nigerian bank account.

Note 2: there are no referral bonuses. It means that when you refer people, you earn nothing. You only donate to move up and allow others donate to you. This is because the system doesn’t mandate you to do so. However, it’s okay if you refer friends so they can benefit from the system like you. (which is what I’m doing for you right now 😀)
See you at the top when you register with this:

Nobody has ever come to this business with more than 7400 naira. But people have earned more a fortune from this. I am a living testimony

Don’t be afraid to try new things, for fear kills more.

Laziness Delay’s and Kills Dreams

According to Wikipedia,  Laziness is a disinclination (a feeling of not wanting to do something) to activity or exertion despite having the ability to act.

Laziness is a habit than a mental health issue. it may reflect a lack of self-esteem or lack of positive recognition by others.

Nothing irritates me than chronic laziness in others. mind you, it’s only mental sloth i object to. physical sloth can be heavenly Elizabeth Hurley

To me, i think procrastination  is the  starting point or symptom of Laziness and also think it’s the first habit to drop in other to save your dreams and desires from getting washed away.

I don’t know how people expect to get to anywhere being lazy. Many of us are though, we weren’t born like that, but as soon as we become older you get hit by problems, gain more knowledge and more Responsibilities.

SEE ALSO: How to get rid Of Laziness and Feel Motivated

Being Lazy generally means that you’re not willing to accomplish your aims and dreams early, Work hard to get to where you want to be.

Laziness can attack you at any moment. Many times we are not so aware of it, otherwise we are. One way to know whether or not laziness is attacking you is that you start making excuses as to why you cant perform a task.

This is why so many people, businesses, and start-ups remain stagnant for a long time.

Aim at perfection in everything. However, those who aim at it, and persevere, will become more successful than those whose laziness make them give up as unattainable.

Failure is not the only punishment for laziness,  there is also the success of others- Jules renard

Run away from laziness, work hard, listen to the heart, listen to the step that will make your dream. I heard somebody say: “the heart releases false ideas at times”. – NO, that is a big lie! The truth is that, you listened to someone else heart, not yours. Always remember that goals and dreams are reached progressively, not all at once.

To avoid being lazy get rid of fear, because at times we mistake it for laziness.

QUESTION: What common fears might be related to your attitude of being lazy? And how do you prevent them?

See how banana & plantain business can generate Millions

Banana farming is the most neglected farming in Nigeria, yet, holds more promises and profit potential than most other farming. Knowledge is power and useful, but when it is kept away from the others it becomes useless! In this post we want to take a look at banana and plantain farming in Nigeria and how to get started.

images-37

You can be making N1million monthly from banana and plantain farming if you take it to the commercial standard. If many people Nigeria today could sit down and review their living standards, they will see that most of their complaints for poverty and their inability to take care of their situation were actually their own making.

Why would the city be clustered by hungry people who are doing nothing when the surrounding states are made up of vast expanses of productive farmlands? Even when you can make millions from farming without stress? Take up banana farming today and see how it goes.

Hear what a man said with regards to this: “I was shocked that I was largely to blame for the poverty I was wallowing in. Since then I resolved to do something to turn round the situation,”

Many people today are still wallowing in abject poverty notwithstanding that they can still conveniently do some things about the sad situation and rescue themselves from poverty, take care of the situation by embarking on personal business or the other instead of waiting endlessly for a white collar job that may be here today and gone tomorrow.

Do you know that plantain and banana mean much more than being carried with tray-pan and running after vehicles on the go-slow as so many are seen doing in many parts of Nigeria? If we realize that the demands of these fruits that has become staple food in Nigeria and other parts of the world is increasing by the day, we would then know that thinking towards that area would make some serious business senses.

Take plantain for example, Nigerian are not playing with it as they prefer eating it in various ways both ripped and unripe and very good for those working on their sugar levels.

Again other foods like beans, rice, and groundnuts all make very good combination when taken with banana or plantain. Think again about the delicious chips that we like to eat, all these and many more are the end products of plantain.

So without going into much details, looking at various usages of these fruits is enough to tell someone with entrepreneurs mindset that this is simply, money in bunches!

You may be new into farming or has been farming but hasn’t cared enough to consider banana and plantain as all that important.

Banana

But with the above brief analysis, we are encouraging you to give it a trial, with the assurance that if done properly,  you will not regret it.

For those interested in plantain/banana cultivation, we will be glad to provide you with just enough knowledge needed to go into its farming and take part of the profits that those already in the business are enjoying.

Guidelines For Starting Banana And Plantain Farming

  1. Look for the right climate –

Agriculture-Nigeria-e1468769335599

Plantain and banana have one thing in common and that is, they thrives very well in an average climate that is neither too hot nor very cold. They do well in naturally fertilized soil or thick compost manure. Having them in groups is another tricks to getting good harvest because they protect each other from harsh rays of the sun or alternatively, if there are other trees to provide some needed shades that could help to maintain the humidity of the environment, that would suffice.

  1.  Get Healthy suckers –
Banana and plantain suckers
Banana and plantain suckers

Bananas and Plantain are not grown like other plants but its grown through suckers and as such, choosing healthy suckers goes a long way to producing healthy harvests. Always use suckers from matured and dying plantain or banana plants.

  1. Transplant –

images-38

While transplanting, make sure that the corm or the roots at the bottom is trimmed properly to facilitate good growths. Give five meters gap between plants and keep the plants moist at the early days but do not over wet the soil because the leaves are not yet out for much water evaporation.

images-39

Also apply any method to have it protected from some strong winds and throwing the dead plantain leaves back into the plant is good to sustain the needed manure for good growth.

Do not leave much suckers to be attached with a plant as two are usually enough. Cultivating plantain or banana doesn’t usually cost much except the initial securing of the land and planting the suckers after which the plants keeps growing unassisted.

Once it starts to produce, another form of work involves is to make sure that strong winds doesn’t get freely to it as that could bound to be falling the trees.

Starting a plantain or banana farm is not in any way expensive if you have a sizable land. The only thing that you would spend little money on are for the clearing of the farmland and buying of the suckers for planting.

images-36

For an acre of land, you may spend less than N300,000 to have every thing done and includes some clearing as the needs may be until the first harvest.

Once a plantain plantation picks up, the owner stands the chance of continuous harvest for the next 20-years or more depending on how the farm is maintained.

The best breeds to go for, is the “hybrid/agbagba” this is a good specie because apart from producing on time when properly taken care of, it’s usually very big and long; making people to compare it with elephant trunks.

Maintaining the plants doesn’t entail more than heaping soil around the suckers, removing of the unwanted suckers, fertilization, mulching and weeding once in a while.

Banana

In a banana or plantain farming is very lucrative because any amount it gives you on the first harvest, be sure that with less hard work than all that you started with, you would be making an increment year by year till the next 20 years or there about.

Plantain farming is a sure business if only the farmer see it as such. When you go to mile 12 market, Ketu market or any other markets where the fruits are being sold, you would be made to understand better that those making it possible are not in any where joking because it is a viable business.

Plantain-Market-Osun-Web-300x200

Though the business is lucrative but the advice from long time farmers is,

‘The size of your farm should depend on the size of your dream, creativity and innovation. Avoid taking on too much than you can be able to handle financially and in terms of personnel’. Besides embracing modern farming practices, seeds and technology, be passionate about what you do and give farming additional time’.

Those are the words from the horse’s mouth, those who had changed their life stories with various forms of farming, banana and plantain inclusive.

The man we started his testimonies with in this post still has much to share with us as he continues….

“I had always dreamed of becoming a big farmer. Naturally, I was inclined to the agriculture sector, in which I believed I had some basic skills to do a decent job,”

That didn’t do much for him until he backed up his words with determination and stood up to carry out his long held heart desires of going into farming and that changed his life for the better as he have this to say “I could now see my dream taking shape…I could see myself as the biggest farmer in our locality. I was determined to make commercial farming a pedestal for a better future for my family,”

You may be surprised to know what this successful farmer is giving these praises to. He started with Pineapple farming and cattle rearing and later diversified into banana cultivation. His testimonies continues…

“I was among the poorest people in the sector, but he now I owns the most beautiful house in the entire village. My children are studying in one of the best schools in town.” This farmer concludes with this counsel for farmers: “Always plan your projects well and be focused. He adds that only those that dare to dream big and take that extra-mile achieve goals. The reality of this saying can only be proved by embarking on the lucrative plantain farming.

Ways to boost the Nigerian economy through Agriculture

Agriculture-Nigeria-e1468769335599

According to Wikipedia, agriculture is the cultivation of animals, plants and fungi for food, fiber, biofuel, medicinal plants and other products used to sustain and enhance human life. It is important therefore to work towards boosting the Nigerian economy through agriculture.

Nigeria is a nation that depends solely on crude oil to drive its economy. Nigeria has been having it good economically until recently, due to the crash of oil price globally and no thanks to the resumed hostilities in the Niger Delta region which has immensely and adversely affected Nigeria’s economy.

To say it simply, Nigeria can no longer depend solely on oil to survive economically. Nigeria must as a matter of urgency diversify its economy for its survival and agriculture readily comes to mind to answer the question of diversification.

Before the discovery of crude oil, Nigeria was basically operating an agrarian economy, which involved the cultivation and exportation of cash crops like cocoa, groundnut, palm oil, etc. It is now high time Nigeria got back to agriculture for economic sustainability. As Anietie Udoema once said, “you cannot change a winning formula.” If agriculture sustained Nigeria in the past, it can equally sustain Nigeria now.”

✅Important Reasons Why Nigeria Must Embrace Agriculture

Nigeria stands to gain a lot if particular if urgent attention is paid to agricultural development. According to Wikipedia, agriculture is a vital industry in China, employing over 300 million farmers.

According to Chief Audu Ogbe, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (FRN), as published by The Guardian Newspaper of February 13 2016, Nigeria spends a whopping $20b on food importation yearly and National Bureau of Statistics, Nigeria reported that agriculture’s contribution to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product(GDP), decreased from N4.5b in the fourth quarter of 2015 to N3.2b in the first quarter of 2016.

The above therefore implies that Nigeria loses so much in food importation and generates so little economically with regards to agriculture. Other reasons are:-

  1. Employment opportunity.
  2. Food security.

  3. Economic sustainability.

✅Practical Ways To Boost Nigerian Economy Through Agriculture

  1. The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) has farms across the 36 states of Nigeria, which is managed by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development should undertake a national survey and tour of the FGN farms and publish the addresses of the farms.

  1. The FGN through the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural development should employ youths into the Federal farms to cultivate the farms. The employees should be paid as civil servants. However, they must be supervised and monitored to make sure work is done.
  • Offices should be built on the farm where full administrative and supervisory work takes place.

  • Ranches, piggeries, poultries, etc should be built on the farms and animal and crop farming will be going on simultaneously.

  • Markets should be built on the farms so that harvested farm produce can be sold immediately without the stress of transportation and other inconveniences.

  • The farmlands or shops in the market could be leased or rented to as many as are interested.

  • Food storage should be a top priority of the government. Dr. Goodluck Jonathan as President established 7 silos for the storage of food. One of the silos which is located in the Sheda Area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is 100,000 metric tonnes silo and is reputed to be the largest in West Africa. More silos can still be built. Every farm should have storage facilities.

  • Public Private Partnership should be encouraged. Government should bring in investors.

  • Farmers and investors should be encouraged by favorable policies, tax rebates or tax holidays, etc.

  • Agricultural Science or agricultural studies as the case may be should be introduced into the education curriculum as a compulsory subject or course from nursery or elementary to tertiary institutions. Every Nigerian student at any level must learn about farming and own a farm while in school. At the tertiary level, the FGN can get a clue from Landmark University, Omu Aran, Kwara State, which ‘Agrarian Revolution’ as its mission.

  • Conclusively, according to the words of Allan Savoy, “without agriculture, it is not possible to have a city, stock market, banks, university, church or army. Agriculture is the foundation of any civilization and any stable economy.”

12 bible verses every business owner need

iStock_000000535182XSmall-300x241 I pull together my favorite bible verses to encourage you along your entrepreneurial journey. Running your small business is a spiritual journey as much as a road trip to business success. Along the road, you will be tested, stretched and stressed and these words from the bible will give you needed encouragement.

This is my 2nd year of writing bible verses every small business owner needs, and I wanted the bible verses that so many of you have shared with me in the comments section of this blog over the last 2years. You all have inspired me.

My bible verse theme for the year is Jeremiah 29:11-13, so many of you shared this verse and when I read it I felt so encouraged. Many of us who run a business can feel like a one-armed wallpaper hanger at times and it’s easy to become too busy or tired and forget to pray. This verse keeps me grounded, and I hope it does the same for you. Here are 13 bible verses every small business owner needs for 2016

Jeremiah 29:11-13 (NIV) “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” In order to have a successful business, you must trust in the Lord. God’s will is what is best for us. There will be times when you do not understand why things are happening in your business, but God is always trying to teach us and protect us.

Often in business when we don’t close a sale or get a contract that we invested a lot of time in, we take it personally. Start thinking about things in your business differently. When you don’t get a contract, it’s because it wasn’t meant for you. In some cases, God might have been protecting you from a nightmare client.

Exodus 35:35 (NIV) He has filled them with skill to do all kinds of work as engravers, designers, embroiderers in blue, purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen, and weavers—all of them skilled workers and designers. God has given all of us talents that we can sell, but that doesn’t mean you should start a business. Make yourself a student of business, first. Make sure there’s a paying client for your product or service. Develop your business and leadership skills so that you can turn your talent into a real business.

Always remember who you are and who you are in Christ. We are not defined by our bank accounts or by how many plaques are on the wall. Never hesitate to share your testimony with others about what the Lord has done for you in business. God wants us to be fine examples of his light and love.

Joshua 1:8 (NIV) Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

The most important thing you can do for your business is pray daily. Start each day in meditation and prayer and you will stay calm as the day’s struggles come upon you. Read words from the bible to stay encouraged and balanced.

Proverbs 16:3 (NIV) Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans. Whenever you have doubt, go to the Lord in prayer and wait on God to give you the answer. Remember that he speaks to us through visions and dreams, and sometimes he will send people who will speak his words to you.

Isaiah 45:3 (NIV) I will give you hidden treasures, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the Lord, the God of Israel, who summons you by name. There is no such thing as luck, only blessings sent from God. When unexplainable things happen, do not be fooled that you did anything to make them happen. Always remember that God has already prepared a place for you to succeed and to learn.

Titus 3:14 (NIV) Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good, in order to provide for urgent needs and not live unproductive lives. God helps those who help themselves. If you do nothing, nothing will happen. Focus your activities each day on trying to accomplish 5 things before 11a.m. daily.  You will feel less stress and get a lot more done each day.

Psalm 37:5-6 (NIV) Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun. There will be times in your life when no one will think that you are going in the right direction with your business. But no one can stop God’s anointing. If he gave you the idea for your business, he will bless it.

Stay faithful and focused. When you think you have no more to give, give some more and you will be rewarded.

Isaiah 54:2-3 (NIV) Enlarge the place of your tent, stretch your tent curtains wide, do not hold back; lengthen your cords, strengthen your stakes. For you will spread out to the right and to the left; your descendants will dispossess nations and settle in their desolate cities. You do not need to wait until you are rich and super successful to help others. You should help others now as you are building your business.

Now, that does not mean you should go hungry to help others, but do not be afraid to enlarge your tent to partner with “so called” competitors. There really is enough business for everyone.

Romans 8:38-39 (NIV) For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. No matter what you do, God loves you. He will forgive you. He believes in second chances and hundreds more, if you need them.

Be quick to forgive and pray for a forgiving spirit. How would your life change if you loved unconditionally?

2 Corinthians 2:14 (NIV) But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere. Be thankful that you know God for all of his goodness. God wants us to be fine examples of his light and love.

Deuteronomy 30:16 (NIV) For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess. Walk in God’s ways and he will bless your business ventures.

I want you all to know that I write these verses for myself, as much as I hope to inspire you. Examine which of these verses speaks most clearly to your heart. I pray that you will be healed by God’s powerful holy word.

    God Bless you in 2016.

Please share your favorite bible verse and tell me what it means to you.

How to Start a laundry service in Nigeria (Dry-Cleaner)

    url1-300x275

Before you start thinking about it, let’s cover some basics in entrepreneurship before we move on to talk about how to start a laundry business in Nigeria.

Often, when business discussions take place, the first thing that comes to the mind of an average Joe is a

business idea that requires a lot of financing…

On the contrary, the best business ideas are not always capital intensive, in fact the brightest

business ideas with great potential are the ones you can start on your own with little expenditure and grow them organically into something big later in the future.

Rightly so, you aspire to be the next Dangote, or Adenuga (me too ), but often we forget the fact that they both had humble beginnings.

What amazes me about the majority of successful people is that they are prepared to roll up their sleeves and do the most menial jobs an average individual wouldn’t do .

Just take a pause and think about it; did you know that Dangote made millions hawking goods to a common man on the street? (technically)… He was a retailer before starting his production company, which he developed in to a lucrative business.

Talking of menial jobs; something like the dry cleaning business instantly springs to mind….

In cities like Lagos and Abuja, where people spend hours navigating the city and are extremely exhausted before they get home from their day job, such people would literally jump at the opportunity of having their laundry done for them, provided that the price and quality is right.

So, Yes! There is a huge market for the laundry business in Nigeria, especially in bigger cities like Lagos, Abuja, etc.

If you’re thinking of starting a business and you need an idea; the laundry business is a viable option that you should seriously consider.

    Hazel-Laundry-Services1-1024x916

HOW TO START A LAUNDRY BUSINESS IN NIGERIA

Because the laundry business is not a complex one, I would try as much as possible to explain the basis in three basic stages:

    #1. Planning:

Just like any other business, the most important part is planning . So don’t delay and start your laundry business plan today, because it’s easier to detect a flawed idea during the planning stage.

Speaking from experience, I have lost a considerable amount of time and money on several ventures because I did not plan before executing.

I just went with it, and the outcome wasn’t great.

The most important point is that you should always plan your proposed business before launching.

Planning a laundry business in Nigeria doesn’t have to be a difficult task.

Here is a quick guide on how to plan your laundry business in Nigeria:

    1. Pick a notebook and answer the following questions GENUINELY:

    (a) What’s the goal of this business?

    (b) How much can I afford to cough out as investment capital?

    (c) Where would the laundry business be located?

    (d) Who are my potential customers?

    (e) How much will I charge my client per service rendered?

    (f) What are the most important Items needed to get started? (More on this later).

    (g) What other sources of capital can I access other than my personal funds?

    1. Draw a business flow chart:

It’s important to draw a flow chart of what your business operations would look like. A typical laundry business might look something like this:

    Customers —> Office –> Laundry Room –> Office –> Delivery/Pickup (Client)

You can then take note of the important personnel and equipment required at each stage of the flow chart.

Personally, I would clearly explain each stage of the flow chart so that you have a clear idea of the important people/things needed

Customers: These are the foundations of your business; you should know that there is NO business without your customers. This is an indication of how important it is to get people to choose you, but you have to give them a reason to choose you over your competitors.

The customer represents the centre of your business, without a customer; there is absolutely no show to run! With that in mind, you should focus more on answering question 1 (d) above.

Office: The chart also shows how important an office space is; which means you would need a space where you process orders from customers.

If you intend to run a large-scale operation, you might want to consider hiring a receptionist to look after your customer service and administration tasks. The office space doesn’t have to be fancy, it can simply be a place where customers can drop off and pick up their clothes, wait, make payment and ask questions.

You would also need an area for storage within the office area; you can always partition the same room.

    LHC-PICS-MAR-2014-023_0

Laundry Room: This is where your core business activity will take place. If you wish to run a reputable laundry business, then you need to dedicate enough time into planning how to make this part of your business efficient, effective and economical.

There are two major items needed in this section; a washing machine and a pressing iron.

Depending on the volume of customers, you have on your list. You can do most of the work here, or at least until customer orders are rolling in more quickly than you and your current staff can fulfill them.

It’s essential that you get a machine that can wash and tumble dry very fast; that way you can process orders in less than 24hours and keep your customers happy.

You can do the ironing as well, or hire somebody to do the ironing and pay them on a performance basis.

Lest, I forget, to provide a consistent service you will need a regular power supply due to the issue of erratic power supply in this part of the world. Getting a medium sized petrol generator can solve this.

Once you’ve taken care of the necessary things, then you can move on to the next stage, which is the actual execution of your laundry business plan.

    #2. Executing:

This stage requires some amount of capital to procure the items mentioned in the planning stage. Once the items are procured, then the execution stage is in progress.

While money can get you the items needed to run the business; and to some extent money can also get you your first customer, but I would like to shed more light on how to “attract” you customers.

Remember I mentioned earlier in the planning stage that you should have a list of potential customers. The execution stage is the right time to target those potential customers and tell them about the benefits of your soon to be launched business.

Make a list of family members, friends, neighbours, and working class citizens in your area that you think will find your service valuable. Arrange a meeting or chat to them in the streets, but most importantly, tell them about your business. Call them to remind them about your business a few days before launching.

It’s easier to sell to those that know and trust you compared to those that don’t, but you still have to give them a reason to chose you. What is your unique selling point?

    #3. Marketing:

Now you’ve launched your business, and you have your first customer. How do you make the next step and scale your laundry business to attract more customers and increase your profits in the process?

Understandably, marketing is essential. But aside from marketing, the most important thing is to offer a service that you are proud to promote, offer a service that your friends can confidently and boldly refer customers to.

It’s vital that you offer a service that satisfies that needs of your customers, and delivers everything that you have promised. This is how you turn first time customers to repeat customers, and make them come back over and over again, and eventually they will recommend new customers to your business.

To promote your business, you can make banners and flyers. If you have the money in your budget, you can create business cards and hand them out to people in your church (or mosque as the case maybe), visit your bank, and other local businesses and leave your business cards with the staff.

Another option is to make a list of hotels in your area, find out if they have a laundry department (Most average sized hotels/motels don’t offer a laundry service), reach out to the manager and strike a good deal with them.

Items Needed To Start a Laundry Business:

    1. Washing Machine

    2. Generator

    3. Iron

    4. Office Space

    5. Laundry Room

Conclusively, the major difference between successful people and the poor people is their ability to take action, and when they take action, they don’t relent until they achieve their goals.

…The offer still stands; would you do my laundry if I paid you?

so what are you waiting for… You can start your laundry business in Nigeria today!

how to Start plantain farming in Nigeria

Step #1: Purchase suitable land to start your own plantain farm

Plantain needs the right kind of climate to grow- for it cannot survive in too hot or too cold environments. If you already have land you need to ensure that it meets these basic conditions.

Plantains grow best in conditions where the soil retains water, that’s why plantain plantations in Nigeria are irrigated. You may not have the means to carry out irrigation so you should consider soils that retain water, have a good humus layer and you should always improvise by incorporating animal manure to the soil to improve on the humus and texture of the soil to retain water. You can also make your own compost by using chicken manure to increase its fertility.

    Step #2: Clearing the land

Once you have purchased your land, you will need to clear it.

Clearing of land includes removal of trees, brush, stumps and stones amongst other obstacles. This is necessary to increase the area of the land base for producing crop, or to make your land suitable for plantain farming operation.

Depending on your budget, available equipment and the location of your plantain farm, you can go for either manual or mechanised clearing.

    Step #3: Prepping the land

Once the land for your plantain farm is cleared, you will need to take certain steps for making the land suitable for growing plantain. This is necessary for creating the right soil conditions for a healthy growth of these young plants, and to ensure that your plantain plantation is successful in the long run.

Land preparation should be done long before you start the process of transplantation of the plant suckers. Although this step may require significant efforts and investment, you cannot skip it, or you will have an unsuccessful harvest, which will set back your plans of owning a successful plantain farm.

Prepping the land will also enable you to structure and plan your farming operational processes and procedures.

The areas that you must consider are:

⏩The availability as well as the quality of water for irrigation that you have

⏩Mechanical actions that will need to be implemented and how they will be implemented

    ⏩Selection of land

⏩Any chemical requirements for improving the soil before transplantation

⏩Equipment and tools that will be required for the cultivation of plantain

    ⏩Labor and manpower requirements

    ⏩Leaching schedule

    ⏩Time schedule

    ⏩Financial requirements

    ⏩Hole preparation

    Step #4: Purchasing Plantain Suckers

Plantains are propagated vegetatively, from corms, which are underground bulbs or rhizomes or from suckers, which are shoots that grow from the bud that is at the plant base.

Since the use of the entire corm is quite laborious, the more common method is to grow those using small corms. The mother plant makes three kinds of plantain suckers, namely sword suckers, maidenheads and water suckers.

Sword suckers come with a short pseudostem and have narrow leaves, similar to blades, along with a narrow base. When they mature, they have fruitful and healthy pseudostems.

Maidenheads come with a pseudostem that is large and does not produce any fruit; white water suckers have broad leaves with short pseudostems.

Water suckers do not have a strong attachment to the rhizome, and produce less fruit with weaker plants. They are less preferred in comparison to large sword suckers and maidenheads.

It is essential that you purchase suckers only from a farm that is reputable and trusted. There is no fixed price for these, a conventional sucker can cost anywhere around N50 to N100, while a hybrid will cost around N120 to N200. This price may again, vary depending on where you procure it.

    Step #5: Planting

It is essential that before you begin your plantain plantation, you eliminate any grass or weed competition. To prevent any re-growing of weed, you can use mulching.

However, for turf grass, you will need to either use herbicides or go by the hoeing technique. If you are planning to plant for producing fruit, there should be a space of at least 8-10 feet in between. Irrigation needs to be applied at regular intervals to keep the soil moist. Ensure that there is no standing water since plantains are not tolerant to wet conditions.

Step #6: In-organic and organic fertilization

After planting, you will need to manure them using a combination of household waste, poultry manure and woodash for improving the growth and yield of plantains. It will also help to reduce the infestation by nematodes and borer weevils.

Organic manure helps maintain the temperature of the soil, conserve its moisture content and help regulate soil acidity. This will help you make the most of your efforts for plantain farming in Nigeria.

    Step #7 Harvest

Plantain trees produce large bunches of heavy fruit, which may cause the tree to slump or droop. If you find that your plantain tree is struggling to stand up due to the weight, use string and bamboo poles to tie and prop the tree.

Fruits appear within 90 to 120 days after the tree flowers. Upon fruiting, plantains are typically ready for harvest within 6 to 8 months.

    Step #8 Market

As a farmer or producer of plantain your ultimate aim is to secure buyers for your produce. In most instances this should be straight forward as there is currently a high demand for plantain.

Buyers can range from the mama in your local market to large companies/industries. However, since industries do not buy small quantities and require that plantains meet international standards, you will only gain access to this important market if your production is to industry specification, both in terms of quantity, quality and time.

    Conclusion

Following these steps with dedication is how you successfully establish your own plantain farm in Nigeria, which is not only a source of great income, but also a way to help the economy of Nigeria.
